Strategies Every Creator & Creative Should Know to Prevent Creator Burnout

We have all experienced burnout, and being a facilitator requires your creativity cells to be at constant work, creating content for your courses! Burnout is a result of both physical and mental stress. When we’re stressed, it takes a physical toll on our bodies, impairing our ability to think creatively.

Creativity also relies on good physical health, but sometimes when things get tough, we can lose sight of the basics – like taking care of ourselves – and end up suffering from burnout. So ask yourself: What can I do to take care of my body and mind? It may seem simple, but it’s worth considering if you want to maintain a healthy state of mind and avoid exhausting your creativity.

End the Vicious Stress Cycle

The stress response cycle is a physiological, neurological, and hormonal reaction to what we perceive as a threat. This is the body’s way of keeping us safe by activating our muscles and cardiovascular system, increasing breathing rate, and production of endorphins.

Threats posed by external factors have changed over time, but the most pressing threat to creators and facilitators is the endless cycle of not getting to the root issue.

The problem is that even after we’ve dealt with the stressor, we often haven’t dealt with the underlying cause of the stress. Our bodies are still “soaked in stress juice,” waiting for some cue that you are now safe from potential threats and can now relax into celebration.

Physical exercise is a great solution to ending the stress response cycle. Physical activity, deep breathing, positive social interactions (even a simple compliment to your local barista counts), laughter, affection, crying, and creative expression all signal to our bodies that we’re safe. If you do not break the cycle of repetitious work, eventually, it will become easier and more manageable, leading to burnout.

Setting Clear Boundaries

Effective boundaries are necessary to maintain a balance between professional and personal life. Without clear guidelines, it can be difficult to determine when work stops and begins. It is important to set boundaries by establishing limits on how much time you spend working, as well as setting limits on how much contact you have with co-workers.

The goal of having strict office hours is to allow everyone in the office enough time to get their work done without interruption. We encourage employees to adhere strictly to these times so that we can all benefit from working together harmoniously.

  • By scheduling vacation and rest days in advance, you can plan around them to ensure a smooth transition back to work. Practising “saying no” when asked to do outside work and prioritizing your own needs first is imperative to maintaining your work life balance.

Finding a Hobby to Take a Breather

Out of all the methods you may try to avoid burnout, one ubiquitously effective way is to be proactive and add a hobby or side project into your life that doesn’t have anything to do with work or being a facilitator! The purpose is to redirect your energy and relieve some of the stress from your normal work hours.

Additionally, having a creative side project can help you feel fulfilled in other areas of your life as well. This can be a sport that you have given up due to being busy with work or another creative outlet such as painting or knitting. Giving yourself a creative outlet is a helpful strategy no matter the kind of workshop you are hosting.

Do Not Force Yourself – It is Not the Solution

As much as you may believe that sheer willpower can power you through whatever stress you are under, it cannot! Facilitators are creators and require creativity, which by nature is never forced. When you’re under a lot of stress, your mind and body are not in the best state to create; thus, it can be difficult to know where to start or how to manage creative tasks.

One important thing to remember is not to force yourself when creating and also to allow yourself to prioritize quality over quantity even if it means producing less content at first. This will turn your audience into loyal community members who appreciate your work, as they are able to sense the genuinity that you put into your workshops.

Take time off!

Similar to finding your own hobby to juggle between work and life, it is equally important to take time off completely! If you feel like you might be burning out, a vacation will help get some deeper rest and take a step back to reflect on what brought you here. If you are already deep in chronic stress, you might need a complete reset, a more extended break, to start your healing process and rebuild your schedule and routines from scratch.

Key Takeaways

Facilitators face the challenges of digital entrepreneurs, but the positives of running an online course often outweigh these difficulties – you get to watch your learners grow and be proud of the results of your workshop.

However, stress is common and natural when you’re responsible for your class, as well as your content. To be creative and produce high-quality work, there needs to be a balance between work and life, and we often forget to care for our own needs above our learners’. Implementing a few small strategies can make all the difference in preventing creator burnout.
