In this workshop we’ll take a look at a beginner-friendly arrangement of Bill Withers’ “Lean On Me”, and walk through the process of how it was created.

Workshop Details

Solo playing requires an understanding of melody (the tune) and harmony (the chords) as two distinct elements. In this workshop we’ll walk through the following:

  • What is a key?
  • Diatonic notes in C and the C major scale
  • Simple melody: Lean On Me
  • What is harmony?
  • Triads, chords in their most fundamental form
  • Creating the harmonized arrangement

Some basic familiarity with open chords is required, but this workshop is beginner-friendly introduction with no further prerequisites.

    This is my second solo playing workshop with Dave, and I plan on attending them regularly. Dave is far more than an extraordinary guitarist-- he is a master teacher whose sessions are explorations of music on multiple levels, from basic fundamental technique, to the theory and the feeling of the piece that is the focus of the session.
