Workshop Details
It’s hard times in academia. Approximately 75% of PhDs end up working outside academia because tenure track hiring has collapsed. Since the vast majority of PhDs come into grad school hoping to be a professor (yes, there are exceptions), you didn’t plan for this, but it’s the reality you’re facing. What to do? Join Dr. Karen Kelsky, the leading academic career coach in America, for a small-group interactive conversation on how to [Session One] 1) face reality and feel your feelings 2) explore alternatives and remember all you can do; and [Session Two] 3) translate your identity and discover new platforms; and 4) free your mind and reclaim your life. This is a workshop, not a webinar, and we’ll share live questions and conversation, with Dr. Karen’s trademark mix of bluntness and compassion. It’s devastating to leave behind the dream of an academic career, but you’re not alone. With knowledge and support, you can do it, and Karen’s promise is: you’ll never look back.

Evelin Barbosa de Melo for Leaving Academia: A 2-Part Workshop for Academics Moving Out and Moving On
Rating: 5 out of 5Excellent workshop! Dr. Karen Kelsky is very knowledgeable and goes straight to the point. Everyone in the audience had a chance to speak up and share their stories (if they chose to do so). Karen also created a very safe and compassionate environment where we felt heard and seen. In addition, we got a lot of practical advice on what to do moving forward.
I'd love to participate in a follow-up session with similar format or we could create a meet-up/ support group so we can continue to meet, share experiences and learn more from each other.
Thanks Karen (and all fellows that joined) for all the encouragement! -
Rima Franklin for Leaving Academia: A 2-Part Workshop for Academics Moving Out and Moving On
Rating: 5 out of 5Excellent session! Karen has so much experience and wisdom to share, and she does it with humor and compassion. This session was a great balance of information delivery interwoven with discussion questions. I loved connecting with colleagues experiencing similar challenges and hearing their stories.
In the future, it could be beneficial to have sessions targeted toward specific groups (e.g., early vs. mid-career) or disciplines (e.g., STEM vs. social sciences). I don’t think having everyone mixed was a problem for this session, but I can see some separation might be useful for more advanced topics.

Sharon Chan for Leaving Academia: A 2-Part Workshop for Academics Moving Out and Moving On
Rating: 5 out of 5Dr Kelsky is a very experienced speaker inviting and facilitating participants to share their own stories, which is one of the most beautiful parts in this workshop. Thank you for the amazing workshop, which had greatly helped me look at my own situation in academic using a wider angle. I am glad that I, as well as other scholars joining this workshop, am not alone. I look forward to more workshops like this. Thanks again!

Cookie Woolner for Leaving Academia: A 2-Part Workshop for Academics Moving Out and Moving On
Rating: 5 out of 5Dr. Karen Kelsky has a wealth of knowledge about life inside of academia and how to strategically pivot out of it. She offered lots of helpful tips on how to begin to envision and make a life outside of academia while acknowledging the emotional trauma and burnout many of us shoulder in this process. The chat and Q&A during the workshop made it feel like a really supportive community and I would love to continue to connect with everyone here via Zoom (maybe doing peer support with feedback in small breakout rooms?), LinkedIn, or other opportunities.
The workshop provides the space, the community, and the initial information needed to assist participants in examining and pursuing alternative opportunities.
Plus: a bonus guest speaker.
