Bio

Dr. Robert Greenberg is Music-Historian-In-Residence for San Francisco Performances.
He was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1954 and has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1978. He received a B.A. in Music, magna cum laude, from Princeton University and a Ph.D. in Music Composition, with distinction, from the University of California, Berkeley.
Dr. Greenberg has composed more than 50 works for a wide variety of instrumental and vocal ensembles and has received numerous compositional honors and commissions.  He has performed and lectured for some of the most prestigious musical and arts organizations in the United States and Western Europe and is, in addition, a sought-after lecturer for music organizations, non-profits,  businesses and business schools.
Since 1993, Dr. Greenberg has recorded 32 courses – totaling some 670, 45-minute lectures – for The Teaching Company/The Great Courses/Wondrium on a wide variety of musical subjects.  His ten-lecture course, Beethoven: The First Angry Man, was released in November of 2019 by Audible, among Amazon’s first such “Audible Originals”.

In February 2003, Maine’s Bangor Daily News referred to Dr. Greenberg as the Elvis of music history and appreciation, an appraisal that has given him more pleasure than any other.
