Workshop Details

In this workshop we will explore several of the most enduring artifacts of this early media sensation. Fans of Uncle Tom’s Cabin created a host of fanworks, and the novel inspired adaptations in multiple other media. We will explore a summary of the novel to familiarize ourselves with the major plot and characters

  • We will examine a number of different fanworks and professional responses/adaptions of Uncle Tom’s Cabin
  • We will review modern studies of fandom and fanworks and media franchises of best selling properties (Harry Potter, Sherlock Holmes, Game of Thrones, Marvel and the MCU….)
  • We will compare past and present fandom embrace of popular media properties
  • We will consider the enduring nature of fandom itself

Eleanor Hannah

I hold a PhD in nineteenth century US history, and I have taught introductory and specialized courses in the history of the US from 1800 to 1900, which is how I learned about the fandom that exploded around the media sensation that was Uncle Tom's Cabin. I also have been an active member of a number of fan communities, including those fan communities that explore the power and nature of fandom itself.
